5 Steps to avoid Procrastination and Fear by Richard Okiasi

5 Checks to Overcome Procrastination and Fear When You Have a Vision/Goal

By Richard Okiasi

Picture this: You have an idea that will wow the world, it's fresh, it's new, it's everything amazing. If you put the idea to work your friends will love it, your parents will be proud of you, the government will immortalize your name.

You think through the idea again, you are blow away, you can't get enough, you fantasize a little more about it. You vow that you'll do it, you convince yourself that you can. Feeling like Obama you scream out "Yes! I Can."

Two days down the line you still haven't started a thing or moved a pin to achieve this mind blowing idea. You vow that you'll start the next day, the next day you swear it must be the next day.

1 month, 2 months, 3, now we are in 4 you have started loosing touch of what the idea really is, what's the goal or target again? All of a sudden "Yes I can" turns to "Why Should I" or "When can I"

You are beginning to lose hope and the confidence you had in yourself. You think about the idea again and how haphazard your idea is now, then you decide it's not worth it anymore, you throw in the towel, you quit!

I know this routine, it plays out every now and then, it can happen to anyone. But it should stop happening to you, you need to stop following that route that leads to you quitting on your goals.

That's why I've put this together; to help you break that jinx and fully maximize your potentials in executing goals. You don't have to be super smart to do these things I share, I've used them over the years to overcome;

•Procrastination

•Fear

•Laziness

•Uncertainties

•Excuses, and the other lame things that hold a person back form achieving set out goals.

If you are already overcoming your fears and procrastination you can stop here, but if you need some help read on...

Check 1: Write it down.

The first thing you do when you get an idea is not to jump everywhere and scream Eureka! The first thing to do is to look for a means to record you idea/Plan/Goal, this can not be overstressed. If the closest thing to you is your phone to do a voice record, a video of you talking about the idea or something, go ahead and record/video. Do not just leave the idea in your head and be screaming. Ideas come in like diffusion and escape like osmosis.

Once that idea comes, as fresh and pure as it is, find a way to record your thoughts as soon as possible.

Check 2.

The Mohammed Ali Technique (Brag about your intentions.)

I know you'll feel very religious because of the mention of the word "Brag" but think about it this way; it's only bragging when you can't prove it, once you can prove it, it's no longer bragging e.g if I say I'll beat Anthony Joshua in a boxing match, a lot of people will call me big mouth, but when I go ahead and beat Anthony Joshua in a boxing match, it's no longer bragging.

Bragging about your intentions can be as simple as talking about or declaring your intentions

Trust me, there are people who already perceive any form of confidence or believe you have in yourself as pride and same way they see anything you say you can do as bragging, since it makes no difference, whether you say it with your mouth closed or with your mouth wide open, people will believe what they want to believe.

Make it known to friends what you want to do. You won't want to look like a fool, so you'll put in your "all" to ensure you do it.

It's the same technique Mohammed Ali used to motivate himself each time, he talked so much about what he was going to do to his opponent, sometimes he was just bragging but he had no choice but to prove it when he got the chance.

You must not be loud mouthed like Ali, it could just be within your friends, but make sure you say it with all boldness and courage. Then you'll be left with one mission "do it, or you look like a fool."
Enough said about this, Check 2

Check 3. Get someone you can report to.

Getting someone you look up to or can report to, will give you enough boost and fire. Sometimes just saying you'll do something is not enough, get someone who can place a check on you to ensure you follow that you plan to completion. It could be a friend, Mentor, Guide, Colleague etc.

If you say something in your mind and keep it to yourself, chances are that you will do it, but greater chances are that you'll not because when you lose the passion/enthusiasm, you can easily quit. No one is watching after all.

Jay-Z told his Uncle that he would be a platinum Rapper, and his uncle doubted him, he was left with just an option "to show his uncle how he'll sell 1 million copies of his album." So in this case his uncle was the one watching.
Who's watching you on that you vision?

Check 4. Understand that people are looking up to you.

Understanding that people are looking up to you can be all the boost you need. It could be siblings, friends, mentees etc but having them watching you and the steps you take to mould their life, will help you face all challenges, oppositions and reduce procrastination.

You don't want to fail/ quit on the road because you have people that your success is a lesson to them, perhaps their success too depends on you succeeding.

As a summary to check 4: You won't kill yourself, but having this knowledge will make you put in extra effort, and that extra effort will just be enough to overcome procrastination, fear and quitting.

Check 5. Start by doing the simple things first.

The small victories lead to bigger Victories. The taste of small wins prompt you for bigger wins.

When you have a set vision, it's best to start doing small things. When you can comfortably execute small stuffs, it'll give you the drive, experience and opportunity to go for bigger stuffs.

The people you met, interact with or shared ideas with when doing small things can create the network that will support you in doing bigger stuffs.

For example, if you want to write a book, you can start by writing small articles and social media post, If you want to start doing YouTube videos for makeup, start by doing short videos of yourself making yourself up, if you want to start teaching digital marketing for a fee, start by compiling a list of potential topics you'll cover if you start teaching.

These steps are active steps that gets your passion set to deliver.

Extra: Learn how to ask questions, not just any question, the right questions.

Atimes the things that make you procrastinate and give up is when you really don't know how to go around obstacles but what if you had people that you can ask questions or seek their support in getting things done, it could totally eliminate some of your uncertainties and give you courage to go for bigger stuffs.

P.S: These are from my personal experiences, they are not written on tablets, they are not commandments. You should try them not withstanding and see quick results.
