Have you ever wondered how T-shirts has now become a fashion choice amongst the young and old? Lets take a walk down memory lane to see how it came into existence.

The T-shirt was first designed as an undergarments, but is now being used as an outer wear rocked of jeans and various type of trousers.

It was first worn by men but is now commonly used by both genders. The length, printing and design continues to change, so has its use continue to evolve gradually.

This article looks at the history of T-shirts, with emphasis from the year 1950 till the 1970's. And also the changes it experienced during those years.


Earlier History

The earliest history of T-shirts recorded was the early 1913. It is used by the american army's as undergarments during war.

Formally referred to as "Union Suit", which came from newyork, white in colour with few set of buttons up. It was introduced to the English dictionary in 1920, after it first answered the name "T-shirt". Thanks to F. Scott Fitzgerald who published the word in his novel "This side of Paradise".

In 1938 another design the "gob" designed sears also gained popularity.

The 1950s

The T-shirts was popular during this period. In the 1950s it wa used in various Hollywood movies by Marlon Brando and James Dean. The T-shirt also saw prints being introduced to it, with mickey mouse from Disney feature. This promoted tourism and the Disney brand at the time. A lot of companies in Florida and Maimi experimented with various designs during this period, but it was still far from what it is now in terms of design.

The 1960s

During this decade, various bright colours were used for the design of the T-shirts. Tie and die with printing was also invented. It became a means of expression by art and design during this period. Some where used for adverts and others for protests.

Furthermore, this period also saw printing inks and quality improve. This enabled the T-shirt last for a longer period.

The 1970s

During these era, customized t-shirts were on the rise. Companies started using them for adverts to sell their products like Coca-cola, and spreading to others. The printing quality also improved to the litho-transfer during this period.

And ever since the 1970s up until now the quality has continued to improve as well as its popularity. Hence, becoming a main stay in the fashion world.
